I think of life sketching as a landscape. When you start to see those hills of Tuscany or French Alps as undulating lines you’ll begin to feel the form that you’re seeing on the model. That will show in your landscape sketches.
Read MoreWhat a great group we had today. Three were receivers of gifts from family and friends and delighted to add sketching to their lives. All from a wide and varied background, some with art experience and some without.
Not that any of that matters today. This is not about having talent as people believe. Its about learning to see. That’s what we teach you. The building blocks of observation. The foundation of all drawing.

Read MoreThis was the first in our new series of ‘Getting Loose with Watercolour’ Workshops. Some students were experienced and others newer to Travel/Urban sketching, but all there to find out why they felt watercolour paint was a challenge.
Read MoreI've been keen to do another Melbourne Sketch Workshop for sometime, as those I've done previously have been very warmly received, and Alissa has given me a wonderful chance to do so.
Join me if you're keen to simplify your sketches and see the easy shapes we look for. We will be around inner Melbourne and sketch as though we are travelling, making quick notes and discoveries as we go.
Everybody welcome.
I’m delighted to say I’ve have now planned the first 2019 Sketch Adelaide Workshop.
I’ve been keen and thanks to Lyn and several others for expressing your interest and making it happen.
If you’ve been keen to become a sketcher or would like to take your current skills further then I’m here to help.
Hi Sketchers,
When Erin said she was taking a group to Cuba in April, I was so excited to say how wonderful my trip there had been.
My sketching journey started back in 2010 at the Manly EHS Studio, although I now live near Surfers Paradise where i enjoy all kinds of creative classes.
I was pleased when someone asked this week after the Newsletter you’ve just received,
‘Where are the sketches?’
Well, because we’ve finished Term 4, there were no more.
But we have a surprise.
A student referred me to a fascinating article in SMH this weekend by architect Chris Johnson. He talks about a radical approach to documenting travel.
Chris Johnson has an old-fashioned – and in that, perhaps radical – approach. The former New South Wales Government Architect and now CEO of the developer representative group, Urban Taskforce Australia, is by no means a man without time pressures.
A very enjoyable day for our students, creating stories of the amazingly tranquil Wendy’s Garden. Wendy Whitely created a peaceful haven from an on old railway yard, beside one of the most gorgeous views in Sydney.
Read MoreIve had such a good week doing one of my favourite things.
Being with students and tutors as they go about their sketching for the week.
It’s pretty special to have this privilege, seeing students in a relaxed state and happily putting paint on paper and delighting in the results. Doesn’t get much better.
Read MoreTravel Sketching classes were creating mood and character either haunted or fantasy upon a particular mansion we chose. Whatever happened beyond those doors!!! One even has bats flying!
A fun week now let the show begin…….
Looking down. In other words a bird’s eye view.
Way up top of some very tall buildings around Sydney, our sketchers gazed down and observed what they could see, and created a story on their page.
Read MoreHowever do you capture water in a sketch! It’s a moving unresolved watery thing!
Well we have some answers!
Many of our sketchers this week were looking at the colours of water in one way or another.
Read MoreOne of the marvellous things we sketchers can do when travelling is to go along to an Urban Sketchers meet up.
It’s so easy to look them up wherever you are on Facebook and tell them you’re in town, and pop along next time they meet.
Some time ago I was invited to present my Travel Sketching Workshop concept to the Art Therapy dept of the very prestigious School of Visual Arts New York.
Val Sereno attended one of my Sketch Holidays in Provence in 2015 and we really resonated. She was with the SVA at the time and we talked a lot about how therapeutic sketching is for people. Any people. That’s the point it’s for anybody at all.
Read MoreWeek 3 has been great fun. Not that our sketching days are ever anything else. But looking at these crazy little Mini minors and mokes brings a smile.
The sketches clearly did that for you too. Look at those expressions on the face of all those vehicles. Even the dog in some of the pics has a similar quizzical on his face.
This was a chilly day and it looked like rain, so our Boston Common sketch plan needed rethinking.
The beautiful Boston Library was our choice but being Sunday, for some unknown reason, they don’t open till early afternoon.
There across the road was the very inviting Fairmont Copley Hotel.
Skies, Clouds, Rain, Wind. Weather certainly has a huge effect on us and as Sketchers we can observe the sometimes more muted colours and try to get that look.
For your second week that’s just what you did. Colours such as Ultramarine, Burnt Umber, Purple Lake to name a few are lovely for moody skies as the seasons turn to Spring. I’m sure a little bit of Van Vogh crept in somewhere too. Such bold and vigorous skies.
Read MoreWeek One and off to an excellent start though some of you seemed to wearing gear very suited to the Antarctic!
Your people sketching in tones and textures were perfect subjects for the weather you’re having. Most of your subjects would be inside like you.
