Taste of Sketching Workshop. Sunday January 13th '19
What a great group we had today. Three were receivers of gifts from family and friends and delighted to add sketching to their lives. All from a wide and varied background, some with art experience and some without.
Not that any of that matters today. This is not about having talent as people believe. Its about learning to see. That’s what we teach you. The building blocks of observation. The foundation of all drawing.

Hi Sketchers,
When Erin said she was taking a group to Cuba in April, I was so excited to say how wonderful my trip there had been.
My sketching journey started back in 2010 at the Manly EHS Studio, although I now live near Surfers Paradise where i enjoy all kinds of creative classes.

‘Where are the sketches?’
Well, because we’ve finished Term 4, there were no more.
But we have a surprise.

Week 8 Term 4. That's it! We made it!
A student referred me to a fascinating article in SMH this weekend by architect Chris Johnson. He talks about a radical approach to documenting travel.
Chris Johnson has an old-fashioned – and in that, perhaps radical – approach. The former New South Wales Government Architect and now CEO of the developer representative group, Urban Taskforce Australia, is by no means a man without time pressures.

Week 7 Term 4. Action People and Loose Paint
Ive had such a good week doing one of my favourite things.
Being with students and tutors as they go about their sketching for the week.
It’s pretty special to have this privilege, seeing students in a relaxed state and happily putting paint on paper and delighting in the results. Doesn’t get much better.

Sketching with USK New York.
One of the marvellous things we sketchers can do when travelling is to go along to an Urban Sketchers meet up.
It’s so easy to look them up wherever you are on Facebook and tell them you’re in town, and pop along next time they meet.

Invitation Sketch Workshop. New York School of Visual Arts
Some time ago I was invited to present my Travel Sketching Workshop concept to the Art Therapy dept of the very prestigious School of Visual Arts New York.
Val Sereno attended one of my Sketch Holidays in Provence in 2015 and we really resonated. She was with the SVA at the time and we talked a lot about how therapeutic sketching is for people. Any people. That’s the point it’s for anybody at all.

Week 3 Term 4. Classic Mini Mokes with Personality
Week 3 has been great fun. Not that our sketching days are ever anything else. But looking at these crazy little Mini minors and mokes brings a smile.
The sketches clearly did that for you too. Look at those expressions on the face of all those vehicles. Even the dog in some of the pics has a similar quizzical on his face.

Sketch Workshop Boston. Simplifying your Sketches
This was a chilly day and it looked like rain, so our Boston Common sketch plan needed rethinking.
The beautiful Boston Library was our choice but being Sunday, for some unknown reason, they don’t open till early afternoon.
There across the road was the very inviting Fairmont Copley Hotel.

Week 2 Term 4. Sketching Skies
Skies, Clouds, Rain, Wind. Weather certainly has a huge effect on us and as Sketchers we can observe the sometimes more muted colours and try to get that look.
For your second week that’s just what you did. Colours such as Ultramarine, Burnt Umber, Purple Lake to name a few are lovely for moody skies as the seasons turn to Spring. I’m sure a little bit of Van Vogh crept in somewhere too. Such bold and vigorous skies.

Suddenly it’s that time again, when we realise we’ve had several wonderful weeks with our sketching buddies and tutor. Some students say they come to sketching because of the friends they’ve made, and it’s the best day of the week.
Sketches this week were whatever people wanted to revise/revisit/ have another crack at.
