Landscapes and Greens

In the last couple of weeks our classes have been spending time observing the composition of landscapes, treescapes and the colours of green.

Finding the focal point is the first thing we need to find in creating a sketch. Where is our eye being lead. We often need to play up an area and give it more interest, move things about a bit even. Or it can be done with detail, texture and colour.

The example above was a magnificent natural composition. One of those classic scenes with beautifully proportioned hills in the background - Mt Warning is a very visible mountain from almost anywhere you are in the Tweed region. There are rolling pastures with cattle grazing and a part of the river just where you’d want it.

The fun part here was to start with a prepainted background in any colours at all, absolutely all in together. Then over that when dry, begin your sketch and just sketch what you see.

Greens are a breeze cos there are multi colours all over the place. We finished this some black pen and white Posca detailing. So much fun.

You’ll also see a line and watercolour version and how we made the greens distinct from one another with light and dark colour.

Loads of variety in our sketches here. We also have some beginners starting their sketching journey with flower and tea cup forms. We always have a fun time. We certainly don’t take ourselves too seriously!
