Sunday Sketching with French Picnic Lunch
Now that the weather in the Tweed is so gorgeous, it seems the perfect time to take our Sunday Sketch Workshops to the park.
So today we did just that for our student who had booked in to treat herself for the day. We have huge shade trees which keep us out of the full sun all day, and still giving us great light.
So there we were with our table set, hibiscus ‘borrowed’ from street trees posing in an antique glass jar. Breathing and enjoying the scene.
We love the whole nature thing that happens here. Listening to the birds squawk a warning to the other critters that the big goanna was looking for lunch. The bush turkey strutting about, quite unperturbed by who else was about. Parrots, butcher birds, magpies, Australian Minors all chattering to the sound of the waves crashing just meters away.
Coffee and croissants (with butter and jam) were a great way to get started and get into the mood of relaxing and getting to know our minimal sketch kit.
Now we would sketch that while we learned about elipses and page planning. What a great start to the day.
Then it was the beautiful red hibiscus that we’d observe one shape at a time. We apply chinagraph to maintain our whites. Looking good so far. Coming together and then it was done.
Now to open our watercolours and place the colours we’ll use, into the palette ready for us to layer one colour over another.
Applying watercolour is very fast. The sketch itself often takes longer. One colour over another and before long the sketch was done. Love it. Looks great. Always does. You can’t go wrong.
Our picnic lunch was arriving and our lovely butler set us a place, handed us a baguette filled with salad and ham along with a glass of crisp Rose.
Sketching makes you hungry so we just had to stop sketching and enjoy our lunch. Camembert and strawberries to follow and we were pretty done by then. Polish off the glass of rose and think about our last sketch of the day.
There was a very handy group of pandanus trees hovering nearby, looking like they were in conversation. They do tend to stand around in a circle and definitely have personality. This we would sketch. Colour was added and we put in a background leading down to the sea. Worked a treat. Oh and a seagull was needed so we popped him.
We so enjoyed being outside and learning to sketch in an idyllic location in the park by the sea. Great work from our student and we’re looking forward to sketching together again soon.
Our Sunday Sketch Workshop with French Picnic is held every alternate week.
Let us know if you’d like to have an experience like this for yourself and friends.
