The Yellow Room. Margaret Olley

The Yellow Room. Margaret Olley

We’ve been rather lucky lately to get all our classes and workshops happening without any Covid breakouts.
Well except for one this week! Saturday Intro class went pear shaped! Wednesday Intro class has been put on hold too.
Any activities in Sydney are curtailed for a couple of weeks while things are being sorted. All positive though as further north in NSW and Queensland we were safe.

Being at home and having to stay there may have an upside for we sketchers wherever we live.
One of the themes we followed this week was Still Life Objects with doorways or windows.
The example above is a classic Margaret Olley, a loved Australian painter Born June 1923 and died July 2011. She loved nature and objects very much and painted exuberantly whatever was around her.
Margaret Olley was also a sketcher. Most people don’t know that and when I found a brilliant book called ‘Life’s Journey’ in the bookshop at AGNSW - I grabbed it. I just love her sketches and drawings. You may be able to get a copy somewhere, and if you can it’ll be worth it.

Although she traveled extensively when younger it’s her flowers still life and object painting which appealed so much to art enthusiasts. When she couldn’t travel as much later, Margaret concentrated on her home and what she’d collected on her travels as her paint subjects.

Somehow that concept seems very timely. Let’s look at out own homes as sketch inspiration and begin a collection of our own. All rooms can be a picture. Bedrooms with doors and windows. Looking from the kitchen to the outside. From the lounge room to the terrace. Start looking around you. It’s all there. Take inspiration from other painters and be inspired.

How lovely to later have a journal of memories of your home and gardens as you lived in it.

But let’s look at what we sketched this week.
