Sydney Sketch Workshop. Jan 18 2023

What a gorgeous day Sydney town put on for us.
Everyone arrived at Sydney Theatre Company Cafe very pleased to see we had a private room almost to ourselves.

A great way to start a morning like this and to get everyone relaxed is to start with a coffee or tea, a bit of a chat and then a still life of what is on the table in front of each person.

Coffee cups, water glasses, pencils, sharpeners - whatever makes a nice little composition. One of the reasons I like to do this is to remind ourselves how elipses work, round tops and bases should match, and to give sketchers a chance to get used to cafe sketching.
If you are alone your sketchbook is your friend.
Take yourself to a cafe and do just what we did here, and you’ll find your far too engrossed to worry about anyone watching. In fact it’s a lovely friendly way to engage with others - theyre usually sooo impressed.

The follow up sketch was straight across the harbour from where we were to Blues Point. The one tall building made it a simple start to our landscape and water view. By observing what shapes were all around that we created a very loose impression of what we saw.
Chinagraph next to keep whites tops and sides, start with our ‘3 Musketeers’ and add the other few colours as layered washes, building one colour over another.

Complete the sketch once dry with a few touches of white Posca pen. Done and dusted.

It was a really creative day and much learning and sharing took place - all with humour and fun. My philosophy ‘Nothing matters’. Its your sketch, your impression and that’s all this is about.

Lovely to have lunch after with those who could stay and hopefully everyone is feeling energised to kick start the year.

Thank you to all who attended and to Kirsten for being there to assist at all times. Till our next sketch adventure together - happy sketching.
