Sketching at Marlborough College Summer School

A great collection of Georgian and Victorian architecture - just perfect for sketching.

Marlborough Week 3 July 25th - July 29th 2022

It feels slightly surreal to be here after twice being cancelled through a certain pandemic.
But we are and everybody is loving being here and very keen to learn.

There are dozens and dozens of courses and my ‘Travel Sketching for Everyone’ have been enormously popular. It’s absolutely delightful to have so many wanting to learn the skills of getting it down quickly and moving on.

Let’s look at what we’ve achieved in the first two days.
We start with observation and first sketch, applying aquarelle pencil for colour.
Next day we get to know our watercolours and how to use the chinagraph. Much fun ahead.

MONDAY JULY 25TH

TUESDAY JULY 26TH

WEDNESDAY JULY 27TH

Today we tackled architecture. So much gorgeous ancient and historical architecture dripping in detail and gargoyles. Really we wanted something flat on so we could focus on the stature and form.

First thumbnail for many. That scribbly planning sketch which helps work out where you want things to be.

Main sketch next and then onto applying paint. We used our gel pens to great effect today on those tiny georgian window frames. Very exciting.

THURSDAY JULY 28TH

Today would really be a challenge for new sketchers. looking at those defining shapes we’ve been looking for. It’s also about foreground, middle distance, background and composition - and water reflections.
Both groups were not so sure they had the concept but as soon as we got back and applied colour they all came to life. Another highly successful day.

FRIDAY JULY 29TH

Our final day of our 5 Day Travel Sketching course here at Marlborough College Summer School.

Today it’s Sketch & Walk. Which means you wander off and take a few minutes to sketch what appeals to you and work over a double page. You are creating a journal of your day and with little notes will be a forever memory.

Our two groups did exceptionally well and are now much more confident at going out and getting something in their books in a short time.
Great work everyone and thank you for putting your books in the end of week display. There was huge interest in what we do. And very understandably.
