What Goes Up and What comes Down

Sketching in Federation NSW

Federation is a tiny one street town not far from Byron Bay and Mullumbimby in NSW.
Our sketch group have really loved coming here and surprisingly there is a cafe with big tables both outside and under cover.
So weather is not a worry.
They happen to make excellent coffee and the food we have at lunch is so fresh and tasty - particularly the sushi.
The best we’ve had.

The street is lined with older buildings which haven’t been renovated in matchy matchy tones of grey and white.
Nope. Whatever the colour was back then, it still is now.

This week was one everyone was very excited about. Eye level perspective. Woohoo.
There is one classic little church up the street - you won’t miss it - which doesn’t even have a name anymore. A passing gentleman said it’s just called The old Federal Church. Ah well.

I’d taken a photo from the exact angle we’d be sketching it from and gave one to each student.
We worked out eye level and then ruled lines to the vanishing point. The penny begins to drop. Once you know this you begin to look at a building and understand what goes up and what goes down.

So once we stood in front of our sweet little church, the lines and angles weren’t quite such a mystery.
Of course it takes practice but it certainly helps to ‘get the knowledge’.

The other half of the day was to sketch the icons of the village as vignettes. Take a double page and scatter your sketches to suit - either big or small. Add some little notes and a heading and there you are. The story of the place in visuals.

Do take a look and enjoy the blood sweat and tears that went into this.😩

Our next term classes in Kingscliff and Bangalow will begin again mid October after my Sketch Travels and Tours.
