Sketching Cafe People

The tiny town of Federal - and Cafe Dome

We’re into Week 2 in the Kingscliff and Bangalow classes both in NSW.
Our subjects were Cafes Food and People. One of our favourites to be sure.

Wednesday’s Bangalow group were at Cafe Dome again as we’re rather fond of this little town. Cafe Dome has wonderful Japanese dishes and the Sushi is some of the best anywhere. You wouldn’t expect it in the middle of a tiny town in the middle of a rural landscape - but the world is full of surprises these days!
We really enjoyed sketching the grouping of still life on our table and decided that ellipses are not as easy as they appear, but we had superb results.

Friday’s Kingscliff class was at Ancora Baked Cafe with it’s big garden space right beside the river. Great coffee too we agreed.
Definitely a ‘People’ class, starting with ‘sausage people’ to learn proportions and then choosing a collection of unwitting subjects seated all around us. What a lovely day we had and luckily no one discovered our secret sketches of themselves.

People sketching in a cafe is one of those skills you can use anytime, anywhere in the world where you're having coffee and there are customers totally absorbed in their own world.

Urban Sketchers Gold Coast had a very enjoyable Saturday meetup at The Spit on Gold Coast. I drove right past Sea World which I’ve never actually seen before and wow it goes for miles!
But getting back to business, the lighthouse at the end of a very long groin was definitely worth capturing. Then there was time to turn and do the dog beach as a totally different subject. Bit of fun. Hope they look like dogs!!

Such a good day and we didn’t get any of the promised storm.

Take a look at our sketches and do enjoy our efforts.
