Sketching Trees - Observing the Differences

If you look carefully - you’ll see lots of sketchers here.

In some of our classes we did Trees as part of Week 2.
It does surprise people when we slow down enough from our busy lives, rushing from here to there and seeing nothing - that observing our subjects is actually meditating.
Particularly in a scene like above. Calm, relaxed, focused, breathing. Just a lovely moment in time.
That’s what we do before we start sketching.
Because we don’t sketch from photographs these are the bonus moments you get from sketching the real thing.

Oooh look that tree has a wide rough trunk. That one over there has smooth bendy branches. But that one over there is very tall before the branches begin. And this one near by has roots like elephants feet and incredibly big wide branches. And what’s more, it’s 10 degrees cooler here under the trees than out on the street.
It’s summer here so that makes a big difference.

Take a look and enjoy our sketches from the week. From classes to Urban Sketchers.
