Sketch Workshop using 3 Colours
Saturday January 16th 2021 .
’How can we sketch if we don’t have a lead pencil?’ You can see the disbelief on their faces when they realise there is no lead pencil involved when Erin takes a class or workshop. No erasers. No rulers. Is that even possible!!
Well guess what - it is. What’s more, the sense of freedom when you begin putting down lines in black pen - without any fear of it being right or wrong - wow you can feel the collective sigh of relief.
This was another very successful fully booked workshop in the #makersatthemill series.
We were in the delightful garden at Stamp&Grind Cafe in Condong, part of the old General Store next to the big old Sugar Factory next door.
Our subject would be coffee and cake set up in front of you on 3 separate tables, as much in the shade as possible. Of course we need to sketch before eating our cake, though we have tricks for drinking coffee while still hot and getting it sketched.
Everyone’s kit contained a sketchbook, black pen, and 3 different coloured aquarelle pencils, all in a handy zip pouch.
We always start our sketch with one object, and add the other shapes around it. So our cake was the first piece of the jigsaw.
Next we popped in the coffee cup, and the water bottle to make a nice composition of 3 items. Some had a little frangipani flower in there too.
Erin does a step by step demo to each group and we’re on our journey. As we add all the elements, you can see people relax and simply enjoy what we’re doing.
Colours are the exciting next step. Hold the pencil this way - to get the width of it for high speed colouring. Add another colour, and the other. One over another. Wow. Looking great.
You can let yourself go here as we’re not copying anything, just letting our colours do the magic.
Add a dash of water if you like - but hold back - just in selected areas.
As you’ll see below, my demo page was full of different shapes and colour combos, and they all work.
Great work everyone and thank you for coming along to try your hand. A big thank you to Karen and Geoff who hosted the event, and providing cake coffee, water, popsicles and extra biscuits to keep up our strength.
