Montville & Maleny, Sunshine Coast, QLD
Join me, Tricia Sullivan for a 3 Day Travel Sketching Workshop
in the Hinterland of the Sunshine Coast in August 2026
DATES:
Friday August 21st to Sunday August 23rd 2026
Why not treat yourself to a long weekend all about food & friendship, laughter & sketching.
This area of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland is in the Hinterland behind Noosa.
It is covered in lush, tropical rainforests, farmland and is the home of the famous Glass House Mountains.
The quaint little mountain villages of Montville & Maleny were first settled in 1887.
They still have that old world charm and are full of art galleries, gift shops, boutique clothing shops
and cafés selling fresh scones & cream with their coffee.
This fertile region has also encouraged restaurants and vineyards to flourish, and we will explore these as we sketch and dine over the weekend.
All about escaping the everyday - so bring your art kit for the daily opportunitiesto sketch this beautiful area
and bring an esky to fill up with local produce to take back home and savor your memories.

GETTING THERE:
Maleny & Montville are just a 40-minute drive from the Sunshine Coast Airport.
If coming from interstate, consider arriving by plane, and pick up a rental vehicle.
This is a self-drive holiday so you will need transport.
•
ITINERARY:
Friday
• Lunch & wine tasting at Flame Tree Hill Vineyard in Montville.
• We can dine on the deck as we look out over the vineyards and sketch our landscape.
• After lunch we will settle into our boutique accommodation and dinner is to be advised, closer to the tour date.
Saturday
• Breakfast will be at the popular Poets Café in Montville.
Located on the Blackall Range, this café has stunning views to the coast
but more importantly its ornate façade evokes memories of old-world European cafes. It’s a perfect building for us to sketch.
• After breakfast there will be time to shop in Montville.
In this village it is possible to buy locally made Chocolate, beautiful art, wooden cuckoo clocks, homemade fudge,
boutique clothing, pottery and handmade gifts.
• In the afternoon we will drive to McCarthys Lookout to sketch the sweeping views over the famous Glasshouse Mountains.
• I’m sure we will all look forward to a leisurely late afternoon break before meeting up again for dinner in a local restaurant.
Sunday
• Let’s finish our weekend spending some time in nature at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve.
You might choose to wander amongst the rainforest on the boardwalk to find your source of sketching inspiration or have a coffee in the Mountainview Café as you sketch the surroundings.
• Lunch and our final sketch for the day will be in the family run Maleny Cheese Factory and Cafe.
Bring an Esky in case you decide to purchase some of the freshly made award winning produce. It’s also possible to take a 30-minute tour to learn, taste & experience the art of cheese-making – from farm to flavor ($15 per person)
• On the drive up to - or home from - this lovely weekend away, you might choose to stop by The Big Pineapple at Nambour
or explore the famous Ginger Factory at Yandina – that’s if you haven’t bought enough food or done enough sketching already!
SKETCH KIT:
You will only need the colours that Erin Hill uses, or similar.
https://erinhillsketching.com/the-sketch-kit
Any size sketch book you like – but I recommend following Erin’s suggestions in the sketch kit link above.
We don’t need many sketch materials to create a loose, fun, bright sketch of the places that we see.
