Sketching For Pleasure

The little old cottage at the entrance to Bangalow Showgrounds.

The little old cottage at the entrance to Bangalow Showgrounds.

We sketch for the absolute pleasure of it.
It’s meditative, therapeutic, relaxing, and perfection isn’t required.
Purely our own journey of everyday moments we treasure.

It’s already Week 4 Term 1 for Gold Coast, Kingscliff and Bangalow and Mosman
We also have Tammy’s Taste of Sketching Workshop and Week 1 Beginners.

But let’s get started and see what our very enthusiastic students have achieved this week.

*

GOLD COAST QUEENSLAND
DBar Cafe and Point Danger Park Coolongatta

Settled in our covered shelter with our coffee, we were about to sketch ‘People’. This always brings a gasp and and ‘Oh no’.
But of course people are just shapes like everything around us is. You observe what shapes they are and you’re half way there.
Our 3 mannequins were posed on the table and we’d do at least 3 different poses with them. They’re very patient and they don’t move.
Our OnGoing sketchers also did a sketch of the shipping monument over by the Search and Rescue station.

Next was a huge view looking down over Rocks at Snapper Point. Another gasp. Observe the shapes and you’re on your way. Just to finish the day, a quick sketch looking to Rainbow Bay was completed.
A very good day indeed.

BANGALOW NSW
Woods Cafe and Bangalow Showgrounds

Nice to back to our familiar cafe where this term began. A 10minute sketch was our warmup. Whatever is on the table is fine for this. Just go for it. Adding colour then takes just a few minutes. First sketch, Done and dusted!
Our 3 mannequins are having a bit of travel this week. Now they’re in another place. But as always they patiently pose while we learn human proportions. toss a bit of colour and play with what it does.
Architecture or Flat Perspective is next on our schedule.
Such a quaint little wooden cottage and just spot on for us to sketch.

KINGSCLIFF NSW
Sheoak Shack and Fingal Head Park

We were at Sheoak. Week 4, table 4. 😊 Ordered coffee or tea, and began our 10min warmup sketch.
Any 3 items in from of you, and we’re off. Actually managed colour as well with a couple of extra minutes. Great. You’ll do a fine job sketching on the run wherever you are.
Mannequins once again posed for us while another student did the whole family.
For flat perspective we chose a classic beach house on the rise almost beside the cafe. A rare find. The lovely Janie who owns it raced over to chat and was so excited to see us sketching her place. Hope she likes the results!
Watercolour was applied back at our cafe table and we all did a very fine job.

WATSON’S BAY, SYDNEY NSW
Taste of Sketching Workshop. Watson’s Bay Park

Weatherwise, Tammy was so thrilled at the glorious day that dawned. Two Students were back for another full day Workshop under the big fig trees, beside the wharf and fab cafes at Watson’s Bay.
Of course coffee and nibbles are a vital start for our sketchers and just happen to be a lovely starting sketch.

Trees are always important to learn the shapes of. They’ll appear everywhere so great to get them under your belt.
A little perspective rounds off the day and Flat Perspective is always a very good way to observe your building - without the ‘what goes up or down’ concerns.

WATSON’S BAY SYDNEY NSW.
Watson’s Bay Park

A very exciting first Week 1 for our Beginners. Tammy has her ‘outdoor studio’ setting under a glorious fig tree, with views to sea, and excellent coffee nearby.

Foundation steps and observation were explained and before long, wonderful sketches appeared from students who’d never sketched before.
OnGoing students were refreshing lovely heritage architecture nearby.

MOSMAN, SYDNEY NSW
Mosman Studio and nearby park.

Saturday Beginners Week 4.
Our Saturday sketchers were not dampened by a little spritz of rain.  With so many beautiful bays and headlands around Sydney, water and how to sketch it are an important part of any sketcher's repertoire and we had a lot of fun working out those challenging boat shapes too.

MOSMAN, SYDNEY, NSW
Friday Beginners Workshop No2

Friday's Beginners are shimmying along - today we revisited shapes and simplifying of light, took a short stroll to sketch a lovely local park, and learned to see the clusters of leaves, and then came back to the 'studio' for an intro to watercolour paint - a very full day indeed!

Till next week - Happy Sketching everyone.
