The Sketching Journey Progresses

Beside Currumbin Creek

Beside Currumbin Creek

For many of our classes this is Week 2.
The concerns about not being able to draw a straight line are well and truly over. Already our students can say how they’d begin a sketch and what is the main starting shape.

From Gold Coast to Sydney, our students are discovering their sketching skills and many have done quite a bit of work on their own with their new found skills.

Let’s see what happened this week.

GOLD COAST Wk2.

At Remedy Cafe, near the Thrower Bridge, Currumbin.
Our warmup sketch was intended to be the coffee cups and other table decor sketched in 3 colours. Our 3 Musketeers. Our foundation 3. Here we show how a complete sketch can be done with these. Yellow Ochre, Cad Red, Ultramarine.
But seagulls and flowers are perfectly fine😀
For our experienced students, we wanted 2 different watercolour sketches of a view they would choose, looking over the water at Currumbin Creek - more of a river!

Our newer student would stay with Aquarelles this week and we’d do the magnificent Fig tree with it’s twisted trunk and branches creating shade for those who’d bagged a seat on the beach.

BANGALOW Wk2

At Heritage Cafe and Gardens, Bangalow.
It actually began to rain as we were starting class, but we were already settling into our window table in the huge cafe on the verandah at Heritage. Rain made no difference as we could see everything we needed from here.
Our warmup sketch started with our discovery of the teapot collection which we couldn’t resist. We’d make this a vignette and spread little sketches over the page - or double page.
We sketched one little teapot in our 3 colours, but couldn’t wait to throw watercolour on the rest, particularly the half round yellow one with a lovely story painted on to it. Who cares about rain.

Our tree of the day sat right outside the window. Trunk and branches were sketched and colour applied in a really short time. Time runs out so fast!!!

KINGSCLIFF Wk2

At Cubby Bakehouse, Chinderah.
This is a favourite spot for locals, and we were lucky to get a good shady bench to begin our class. The coffee here is excellent as is the food. A great way to start.
First up, the warmup sketch. Coffee cups, juice or whatever three items were in view. Sketched in pen and coloured in our 3 musketeer Aquarelles. You know what they are now😀
The flower Bower entrance to the garden had caught our collective eye, and was our next choice.
A beautiful curved display of white flowers, buds and leaves urging us to sketch them. We ignored the road outside and turned it all into a tranquil park like scene. Our first watercolours and such lovely results.

MOSMAN Wk2

At Mosman Studio.
Students were surprised by the magic of pigment and the beautiful things that happen when watercolours run wild. After a quick warm-up using continuous line, and bit of history of pigments, we started splashing around, setting up our palette of colour and trying different combinations. A very satisfying morning

Check in again next week and see Week 3 sketches.
