The Journey Begins. To Cuba via Dallas Texas & Cancun Mexico

The journey begins. We’d be away from Australia for close to 6 mammoth months. That’s the marvellous life I lead and to be able to sketch and to teach others is an absolute privilege. The places we will go, the people we will meet, the things we will learn and discover, all ahead of us on this very early morning.

Up at the sound of the first flights arriving, to look out of the hotel window and see all the action across the road at the airport. Golly these places are all go from way before it’s light and I’m fascinated by the goings on. I grabbed my sketch book and hurriedly sketched what was there. Not much watercolour needed. Just enough to give it a busy dash of colour before we popped over to the checkin desk.

We were actually headed to Cuba for our Sketch Tour beginning on Monday April 15th, the first tour on our agenda. But for all sorts of reasons, we needed to fly to Dallas Texas and stay one night then another flight to Cancun Mexico.

Milton and I were very happy with that as it was a chance to see two new places and to sketch there.
Being in Dallas meant we could go and visit the JFK Memorial, a white block structure dedicated to remembering President Kennedy who was shot there on November 22nd, 1963.

In fact it was Old Dallas County Courthouse which caught my attention. A gorgeous Victorian style building with turrets and peaked slate rooflines framed with beautiful old oak trees. You can see the view I picked and I managed to ignore the scaffolding which was there. No idea. Didn’t ask.

I seriously have to mention the eyeball statue!! It’s an enormous ball which is placed at the top of a small park and which stares down at the incredibly popular wedding venue in front. People love it! No plans to sketch it at all.

Then off to Cancun. This is the far end of Mexico which sticks out just a stone’s throw from Cuba on the Caribbean Sea. It’s definitely got the flavour of Mexico and with it’s gorgeous pale sand beaches, is a favourite resort town. We arrived late and I managed a night sketch of the hotel pool and courtyard while Milton had a relaxing swim and a beer. We loved our poolside dinner and a lovely sleep before our flight to Havana next day.

Be sure to follow the adventures coming.😊
