Caunes Minervois Travel Sketch Weekend.
Caunes-Minervois is a small very pretty medieval town and commune in the Aude department in the Occitanie region in southern France. It is known particularly for its ancient Abbey, dating from the eighth century, and the outstanding red marble that has been quarried locally from Roman times. The name may derive from the ancient local Occitan word for cave, “cauna”, of which there are a number in the immediate area. You will be staying in a smaller family owned abbey.

ITINERARY
Friday Eve. Plan to arrive at Hotel d’Alibert by 7pm.
Address: Rue Saint-Genes, 11160 Caunes- Minervois.
Meet Fredric, Mathilde and Charles, the family owners, and be shown to your room.
Meet for aperitifs in the courtyard and then to dinner at a nearby restaurant.
We’ll have an introduction to what’s ahead over the next 2 days.
We can chat about your sketching experience and what you’d like to achieve. Chat about the sketch kit. A quick food demo which you’re welcome to try.
Saturday. Enjoy a beautiful breakfast in the courtyard. Expresso cafe or fine teas, just baked croissant and baguette with butter and jams, eggs, yoghurt and seasonal fruit.
We’ll start our warm up sketch at 10am on the courtyard tables. Our sketching will be plein air and we’ll find a location for our village sketch. At 1pm we’ll take a break and order some something delicious. With a drink if you like. Here we’ll sketch the table settings then off agin sketching till 3.00PM.
Meet again at Hotel D’Alibert courtyard at 7pm for aperitifs and chat about the day. Dinner at nearby restaurant where we’ll critique our work and chat about how to progress.
Sunday. Relax over your beautiful breakfast and enjoy the sounds only of birds chirping.
A warmup sketch and out on location for a plein air sketch till lunch at Midday in the local Bar. We can continue till you must leave us for the airport.
Return home having chilled out in the quiet of a tiny French village, with sketches to remind you that you have become a sketcher and that it wasn’t just a dream.
We do quite a bit of walking so do make sure your fitness levels are fine for up and down steps and stairs, and cobbled laneways.
