Itinerary
Saturday October 9th.
Meet at the hotel at 6.30pm for drinks, introductions and a briefing.
Dinner together at the hotel.
Sunday October 10th - Devonport.
9.00am. After breakfast we’ll have our first lesson and warmup sketch at one of the big tables at the hotel.
10.30am. Mt Victoria. We’ll walk to the top of the hill and observe the views as we go.
We’ll sketch looking down over Cheltenham Beach and apply watercolour there.
Lunch 12.30pm - 1.30pm in a local cafe.
2.00pm. For those who’d like to, we’ll sketch a harbour view from part way up
the Mt Victoria pathway and apply our colour there.
Colour can also be applied on location or back in the hotel.
4.00pm.Finish sketching
7.00pm. Those who’d like to do dinner, meet in Hotel foyer.
Monday October 11th — Auckland Museum, - Maori Artifacts & Domain Gardens.
9.00am after breakfast we’ll walk over to the ferry wharf and catch the boat to Downtown Terminal.
Take a taxi to the Auckland War Memorial Museum.
The impressive Maori section is well worth sketching.
There’s the huge Waka (Maori canoe) and there are many beautiful cloaks, clothing, weapons and jewellery for us to sketch.
Lunch. 12.30pm - 1.30pm. Grab a picnic lunch at The Wintergarden Cafe in the Domain Gardens.
2.00pm. We’ll sketch some of the native pungas, palms and flora at our leisure.
There are ponds and birdlife to add to our sketch choices.
4.00pm. Taxi back to Downtown Ferry Terminal. Boat back to Devonport.
7.00pm. Those who’d like to do dinner, meet in Hotel foyer.
Tuesday October 12th - Devonport Foreshore. Sketch with Tony’s class.
9.00am after breakfast we’ll walk over to the Park opposite the hotel and do an architectural sketch of our hotel.
12.30pm - 1.30pm. Lunch at one of the cafes along the foreshore.
2.00pm. Yachts in the boatyard is always a typical Auckland scene. This is a yachting city after all.
4.00pm. Back to the hotel or time to do some local shopping.
7.00pm. Those who’d like to do dinner, meet in Hotel foyer.
Wednesday October 13th - Ponsonby. Street scenes & People
9.00am. after breakfast we’ll walk over to the ferry wharf and catch the boat to Downtown Terminal.
Take a taxi to Ponsonby Road.
Here you’ll see the one of the finest examples of timber church in the Gothic revival style.
There are a number of very sketch able wooden buildings along this street.
We may well take a seat at one of the cafes opposite the church (with a coffee) and sketch from there.
12.30am - 1.30pm. Lunch at one of the stylish cafes.
2.00pm. People sketching. Continue our street sketches with added people.
4.00pm. Back to Downtown Ferry terminal and home on the boat.
You are always welcome to stay at the location and make your way back later.
7.00pm. Those who’d like to do dinner, meet in Hotel foyer.
Thursday October 14th - Judges Bay. Chapels, Headstones & Views.
9.00am. after breakfast we’ll walk over to the ferry wharf and catch the boat to Downtown Terminal.
Take a taxi to Judges Bay Parnell.
We’ll begin with a coffee at Rosie Cafe, (purchase something for a picnic lunch) then stroll down to Judges Bay Park for our first sketch.
From here we can sketch St Stephens Chapel, the first church built here in ….
Architecture through tree arches, tombstones and foliage with water views make a great subject.
12.30pm - 1.30pm. Picnic lunch in the park.
2.00pm. Choose a water view sketch and we’ll work on the colours of sea and water.
4.00pm.Taxi back to Downtown Ferry Terminal. Boat back to Devonport.
7.00pm. Those who’d like to do dinner, meet in Hotel foyer.
Friday October 15th - Waiheke Island. Vines, Wines Vistas & lunch.
9.00am. after breakfast we’ll walk over to the ferry wharf and catch the boat to Waiheke Island.
On arrival we’ll take a cab to Casita Miro Vineyard and restaurant.
There are beautiful sweeping views over the vineyards to Hauraki Gulf. There’s our first sketch!
12.30 - 1.30pm We’ll take our lunch table and try some of the wines with a light lunch.
2.00pm. There is much to sketch here so we’ll capture another vista as a memory of our gorgeous day out.
4.00pm. Taxi back to our returning ferry.
6.00pm. Meet in the lounge for a quick catchup of how your sketches went.
7.00pm. Let’s meet in Hotel foyer and share our farewell dinner together.
Saturday October 16th. Farewell
9.00am. After breakfast we can have a short sketch if you have time before departing.
Farewell to you all and we’ll certainly sketch together sometime soon.
