‘Sketch Tour to Italy’
once you’ve made your booking.
Learn some of the sketching tips and techniques we’ll be using every day before we go.
This is our Southern Italy Sketch Journey following our incredible Palermo Sicily Tour.
Welcome. We’re now going into the ‘Boot of Italy’ in the coastal region of Calabria.
Here’s how this tour came about.
We did a really marvellous sketch tour of Campania with our terrific guide Gaetano in 2019
A couple of my students had been there previously and he’d organised such lovely and safe places for them to visit, even on their own.
So I got in touch with him and together we decided to do ‘Sketch Tour Calabria’.
Gaetano was so thoughtful with what we wanted, and took us to some gorgeous spots not at all like a cookie cutter tour. We loved eating locally too along with the people who live there.
He has his own bus so takes us to each location.
Later in the tour Gaetano was saying how much more there was to see in the next region of Calabria (the boot of Italy) which is below Campania.
He said it’s ruggedly beautiful and really authentic which so appeals to us.
Now that is exactly what we sketchers want. Not the big main towns (which people can do on their own) and not ticking boxes to see how many places you can see. Not for us. We want the smaller undiscovered hidden towns and villages and marvellous for sketching.
So we’ve spent a lot of time planning where we’ll go and still having time to really enjoy each place.
If you’re not a sketcher but fascinated with Italy, it’s history and everything to do with the food, the people, the language, then this tour is also for you. We have a history buff with us who will give you background info wherever we are.
OPTIONAL NAPLES ADD-ON.
Even though we complete our tour in Naples, we won’t be sketching there.
However we suggest you spend a few extra days there before flying back home.
Naples is a city rich in history. It’s a place they say you should see before you die!! Now’s your chance.
Our recommended hotel is The Grand Santa Lucia, located on the sea front.
This is very close to Plebiscito Square, The Royal Palace, San Carlo Theatre
and the beginning of the historical centre.
If you’d like a guide we can recommend someone.

You’ve come all this way, so you’ll love this exciting finale.
Over the days you will:
Learn travel sketching techniques, from quick planning sketches to creating larger watercolor sketches in your sketchbook
Develop your observational skills, and learn to sketch what you see.
Learn to layer your colours and get bright clear colour with a limited palette
Learn to sketch people, places, flora and fauna, water and sea, so that your sketchbooks can truly reflect your travels.
Learn compositional techniques for successful travel sketchbooks.
There will be critiques and discussions about your sketches and Erin will spend part of each day “one on one” with you as you sketch the magnificent locations.
