This week our New Sketchers were looking at ‘Flat Perspective’. This is our way of introducing architecture in the simplest way. By standing directly in front of your house or building you get to observe all the proportions and structure without being concerned about perspective.
This is also an excellent way to capturé the charm and local character of architecture in whatever country you’re in. A house in Japan will not look like one in Italy. It’s those differences you’re looking for.
For General Sketchers it was ‘Architecture in Context’. In other words, where is your building. Ours were surf clubs by the sea. That meant it was important to get the character of the setting. Again we were using layers of loose colour, but leaving plenty of whites. One of our classes wanted to play with layering sea and sky colours again, just to feel more comfortable applying paint.
Our Rocks city class chose 19th century inner city terrace houses. Right there beside the Harbour bridge. Using colour appled in simple layers leaving lots of whites brings all to life.keep it clean and clear. We started with an interior corner of our cafe as a warmup.
As a bonus most classes also took a moment to sketch the beautiful jacaranda trees which are in bloom now. We all adore being able to use our purples and lavenders in an attempt to get those soft and allusive shades. Just great work from everyone this week. Your tutors are thrilled to bits.

EHS MELBOURNE Week 6 Term4
We are up to week 6 and Perspective -everyone was pretty impressed with their results after a few practice sessions in the cafe, on a copy of the building we were to sketch.
Everyone was able to quite confidently step outside and sketch 328 Glen Eira Rd in perspective .
We returned to the cafe added colour and then everyone decided to sketch a corner in Le Petit Lapin lots of fun .

I love seeing all of this art. How wonderful to travel and see different places, and preserve the sights with your own personal art. Thanks for sharing and for the inspiration!
