General Sketchers this week were sketching with Al the Barber. But first we completed some fun warm up sketches in the studio. First sketch was a continuous line drawing of a crazy ‘Waste to Art’ sculpture made by Kathy. Lots of lovely detail to keep that black line moving over the page. So much creativity in your largely black and white sketches with a dash of colour. Our next still life was a fabulous curly haired model, with beads and barber inspired objects. Some wonderful facial profiles and curly locks to get us in the mood.
Next out into the sunshine and a short walk to Al the barber. Some sketchers sketched the shop front with its red, blue and white barber pole. Inside provided loads of inspiration, Al at work for clients, wonderful barber chairs and of course Al’s branding graphics. What a feast.
Lunch at Belgrave Cartel where we spread ourselves out and continued our sketching and truth be told, just a bit of chatting about sketching and many other things. Your tutors love the individuality of your sketches, the new approaches you are trying and watching you blossom as you explore the joys of travel sketching.
New Sketchers this week created some wonderful sketches of The Birkley, a short stroll from the studio. A great opportunity for us to practice ‘Flat Perspective’. Lots of puzzle pieces, squares, rectangles, even a triangle roof for good measure. Making quick thumbnail sketches really helped us ease into the sketch and plan the page. This light coloured building gave us a chance to use a wash of yellow ochre and blues for shadows, allowing our paints to blend on the page, loose and happy. Lovely blue skies provided a vibrant backdrop for these blue sky Sydney days. Planter boxes and palm trees helped frame a very sweet sketch. This watercolour ride is so much fun!
Off to coffee & lunch in sunny Manly and a few more sketches to practice buildings. Three cheers to one of our sketchers who sketched on location with a broken ankle and wheel chair. None of this possible without her gorgeous daughter-in-law helping. Lovely sketches everyone, you are all moving ahead in leaps and bounds, with smiles to boot.
EH Sketching Melbourne
Our group this were tackling the most feared subject – wait for it – eye level perspective! It only takes a little encouragement from our tutor with some simple graphs to help everyone to ‘get it’. You’ll see from the great results that our sketchers have now begun to master this one. Lots of smiles and a well deserved coffee.
EH Sketching Auckland
New Sketchers were starting in with watercolours this week. Those yummy little colours just waiting for you to get cracking. We saw some lovely results as we layered one colour over another in big simple strokes.
General Classes were having a refresher on perspective. Starting with bricks in the studio – then a block of brick flats in Devonport and the results were really great. It was less about applying colour – just getting the perspective lines and angles better.
EH Sketching Tokyo
As you’ll see from Atsuko’s new website, she’s been doing a great deal of marketing and planning to find the best locations in an enormous city, and where her classes will be held.
There will be 2 Open Days for people interested in our Travel Sketching classes, to find out what we do and to book themselves in. We’ll keep you updated. Very exciting.
EH Sketching France
We are mady in Tutor training this week and next, before I leave France. We’re looking at just how classes will run given that students are widely spread in small villages in South of France. We are coming up with something quite new to suit his. Again, we’ll keep you posted and you’ll meet our passionate English (French speaking) new tutor soon.
