Week2. Term2. Discovering Simple Colour.

This week some of our classes looked at the translucency of glass. Always a lovely subject and with enough light top and sides, and picking out 2 to 3 colours for each bottle, you’ll have your impression.
Other classes were working on the layering of colour while leaving white tops and sides. Having fruit as a still life made is easy to look for the simple shapes and get the dimension using light and dark.
Trees were also a subject some were covering. By using 3 simple colours one over the other, our sketchers soon learned that getting the colours of trunk and foliage can quickly get the look. Interestingly my final demo with our Greek Isles sketchers was a tree. Someone had felt they still weren’t mastering ‘greens’ so I suggested a demo might help them.
There happened to be a lovely gnarly old fig tree in front of me. So I started with thumbnails to decide which way this fig tree would go. Portrait or landscape. Then asked the students which one I’d do. Landscape was their decision. Into it I went. Observing  where the shapes would go on the page.
I used my thumbnail to show wc pencil layering, then used the bigger one for a very fast watercolour. We’ll work with you on the thumbnail idea. You’ll love it. Much less pain when doing your main sketch.
