Week 4 already and our General classes decided to sketch a Big Vista.
That means weather has to be spot on. No wind or rain. Every class scored but Tuesday, however they bravely fought off the elements and managed to produce some great sketches.
The plan with something big and with lots going on is to find a focus.
What is your main features or icons? Here’s where composition comes into it.
An landmark such as St Patrick’s monastery is a good start. Get your shapes in around it and keep out the detail. An impression. That’s what we’re doing. Get some loose colour on. Drop one colour over another if it’s watercolour. Big slabs. Use layers if it’s watercolour pencil.
Then some connecting colour between foreground and background. Wow.
The New Sketcher classes were trying watercolours for the first time. We have a special way of using paint so everyone is very attentive. No mixing. Keep your colours clean & drop one colour over another. Let it mix on the page. Try it on rock shapes or tree shapes to get started. Magic.
Enjoy this week’s work.
