about

These are not your traditional drawing, illustration or painting classes. This is sketching –  a simple impression, in the time you have.  As you see it in the moment, no matter how wibbly wobbly! A small sketchbook and minimal kit which fits in your bag. That’s Travel Sketching. We focus on easy to learn techniques, fast impressions and finding your personal style. It’s about letting go and enjoying the moment.

We work through a program over the term to give you the core skills needed. You’ll also learn to apply colour in a very simple way. Rather than teaching you to paint, we show you how to apply loose colour to achieve a confident sketch.

There are 3 parts to our travel sketching classes, although we may vary the plan depending on location and weather:

  1. We begin on location with warmup and technique sketches
  2. Move to a second location sketching our subject of the week
  3. Finish at a local cafe, either starting a final sketch or finishing off  our location sketch

class structure

In our 8 week course you'll learn the foundation skills or how to see and create fast impressions. Typical subject we cover include:

- Seeing shape
- Applying colour
- Watercolour introduction
- Flat perspective
- Eye level perspective and architecture
- People and figures
