Hello Christopher Columbus

Santa Maria discovers our Bay
Santa Maria discovers our Bay

It might have felt like this for the locals in America 600 years ago. There you are, stretch, yawn and think about breakfast – when what should be out on the bay is a largish brown wood carrack. It’s the ‘Santa Maria’ and I haven’t  anything clean to put on. Are they friendly or not. We will soon know.

They have canons on board and seem to be getting their gear sorted, as they moor in the bay for several hours. Not wearing strange Spanish outfits but tees and red caps, and they do not attack.

Perhaps they realise that we’ve already  been discovered and that the strange green balloon flying above them is the flag of our conquerer.

They slowly depart some time later and head up the harbour towards Sydney city. Whew that was close.
