Slightly overcast today, and chilly in the mornings. Thought you’d like to know that!
Today there was nothing on the tables when people arrived. What? Whatever can this mean.
Well it means you are sketching each other as if in a cafe.
The person sitting with the cup was the model for around 5 minutes or so.
Everyone else would sketch like the wind to get the likeness into their books plus colour.
We did have some laughs. Our discussions as the sketches progressed were not to be taken personally by the model. They become an object to be analysed and taken apart.
Everybody got over it and off we went to Manly Beach, to sketch whoever was around.
There was a big group of schoolkids having organised games on the sand, all wearing green t shirts, some with and without caps.
They provided a lovely story for several sketchers, including the line of container ships heading north on the horizon.
Then it was Havana Beach cafe. Upstairs with a very nice view looking down over the beach. Nicely rustic and care worn as is the real Havana, with miles of character.
Our choices from the menu were very tasty and went down well with a beer or crisp wine, and sketches actually did get finished.
FRIDAY JUNE 7 ’13
FRIDAY JUNE 7 ’13
Still cool mornings which mean you have to ditch the coat by late morning. Well I do.
Today we all sketched one ‘person in a cafe’ as everyone else at the table sketched you. Then the mug or cup was passed on.
Just some delightful sketches and when people get the half figure in and do less on the face, they work so well.
The models all managed well to relax for their 5 minutes and not be concerned when they saw the results. It’s about the character of the sketch after all. Not how many chins you have.
Off to Manly Beach to sketch beach people. But where are they all? Only a couple of surfers in the distance.
Oh well, there are always lots of locals promenading, so they were it.
Again, some delightful people sketches.
Upstairs to Havana Beach. Today everybody took window seats and carried on with their work.
We do tend to take over somewhat as a rule, all chatting and laughing about all sorts of things. Actually had some competition from a table behind us! Who are these loud people!
SATURDAY JUNE 8 ’13
Another quite hot day during our sketching time. Beautiful and clear – a perfect Winter day.
Christy, our young people’s Sketch tutor was with us again today.
She will be us more over the next few weeks, as she refines which the parts of class she’ll incorporate into the Kids Holiday Sketching workshops.
We had a few laughs as we sketched each other today. The cafe cup doesn’t always make it into the sketch but some great character sketches emerge. Christy also offered and sat elegantly with the champagne flute. Oh we get up to all sorts of tricks on Saturdays!
We had a lovely new student today, so we started her with a little cacti as an object to observe and sketch.
Starting with ‘people’ is a big ask for someone who’s never sketched.
Before long she’d observed the shapes and had an excellent likeness.
You’ll see it in with the ‘Cafe people’ pics so don’t be confused!
We sat on the benches at Manly beach to sketch whoever was wandering about. A lot busier being Saturday.
Even our new girl managed some simple ‘beach people’ sketches.
All the sketches told a story about what was being seen, and observed – including some gorgeous surfers. Great excuse to keep looking. I’m simply sketching you mate. Don’t take it personally!
We had a table near the windows at Havana Beach and the sun was streaming in, as we ordered coffee, chatted, lunched, and sketched.
We enjoy being together and sketching so much we often forget the time.
Another really enjoyable week and as you’ll see, some great sketches.
More to look forward to next week for sure.
Apologies for the quality of this last pic. Don’t know, don’t ask!
