Wow this has been a full week. We had amazing weather so we are really out & about now. Tues4,Thurs6,Fri7,Sat8 Sept’12
Let’s have a look at what we did starting with Tuesday’s Class.
TUESDAY SEPT 4 ’12.
It was business as usual after my Auckland sojourn.
Suddenly it’s Spring and the flowers are blooming, and the birds atweeting.
I picked some flowers on the way to the studio which became our still life setup.
Being in a botanical mood we wandered through Ivanhoe Park, a botanical garden which many locals don’t even know exists.
It was almost too hot to sit in the sun so a couple of the wonderful shade trees did a great job for us to sketch beneath.
Down a little further and we had lunch at La Bas Cafe, one of our favourites.
A very good start to the week, and some beautiful sketches.
So what will they do on Thursday?
THURSDAY SEPT 6 ’12
Hot hot hot. Bush fires have started early.
On the way to the Studio I found even more flowers so we had 4 different setups to choose from, and any 2 were to be sketched before we went out.
All sketches captured the freshness of a just picked arrangement
We welcomed Jenny today and her first sketch was a delight.
Today we walked along George St just round the corner to look at the varying architecture.
Choose a detail or a whole view. Whatever takes your eye. Some lovely choices too.
Karen went back to the brick archway she tried a year ago, with a whole lot of understanding now, and nailed it.
Some had to be away early, hence the pics of varying sketches.
Really satisfying sketches and a lot of pleasure to do.
Now what will the Friday class come up with?
FRIDAY SEPT 7 ’12
Another lovely day. Our beautiful Spring flower arrangements were inspiring to all our Friday sketchers.
How could you not be. Take a close look at a daisy, lavender, gum nut flower and see the miracle.
Two people had walked past the ocean on their way to the Studio and mentioned the extraordinary colour, so we decided to head straight down there after our flower sketching.
Manly Cove Cafe was just perfect for us. We took a couple of tables and the view along the promenade with it’s Norfolk Palms, and the palm trees next to Oceanworld are a delight to sketch from a table under an umbrella with coffee at hand.
There was such a leisurely feel and we could for once take our time. Sometimes it’s nice not to worry about having to hurry and move on.
Next is a Saturday Class – a ‘makeup’ for me being away last week. Let’s see what they did!
SATURDAY SEPT 8 ’12
Yet another gorgeous day.
We didn’t even sketch in the Studio this morning, but wandered down to Federation Point, where there is a wonderful view across Manly, past the ferry wharf and up to my favourite St Patrick’s atop the hill.
Luckily Leonie was meeting us there and had parked herself on the best bench seat with the best view. Those park benches are pretty popular on weekends.
With no rush everyone decided on their view, with an eye to not overdoing the detail in the distance and working out where your centre of focus would be.
As you’ll see all sketches were a lot of fun and we all took great pleasure in seeing what everyone had achieved.
Now for a little treat. Three of the Friday girls took themselves sketching at Foundry 53 last week. They even sent me a photo which I’ll now share with you. Great work Toni, Atsuko and Annie. I was delighted you felt unable to NOT sketch on a Friday.
So yet another week comes to a close and we’ll look forward to more challenges next week. The Manly Arts Festival begins next Friday so we’ll see how that goes.
Happy sketching to all, and to our travellers on the other side of the Globe.
